The St. Nicholas Scholarship for September 2022

The St Nicholas Educational Trust was established in order to provide financial assistance and promote the education of young people in Newcastle.  Northumbria University is delighted to work with the St Nicholas Educational Trust to create the St Nicholas Scholarship, which aims to transform the lives of two Northumbria Undergraduate students.

The scholarship will award two students £2,500 cash per year during their Undergraduate studies. The money can be used to enhance the student’s learning and their overall university experience.

Terms and Conditions

To be eligible for the St Nicholas Scholarship you must:

  • Be a UK/Home applicant
  • Be under 25 years old
  • Currently live within the boundaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, and have been a permanent resident within the boundaries of Newcastle upon Tyne for five years or more.  Eligible postcodes include: NE1, NE2, NE3, NE4, NE5, NE6, NE7, and some areas of NE12, NE13 and NE15.
  • Have a household income of under £25,000
  • Choose Northumbria as your firm choice by 09 June 2022
  • Meet all individual entry requirements
  • Be a self-funded student (ie, not in receipt of sponsorship or other funding for the payment of fees, such as employer funding)
  • Apply for one or more elements of the Government Student Finance package (for example, Tuition Fee loan, Maintenance loan) in order for your application to be means-tested
  • Register with Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Wales (SFW) or Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI)
  • Scottish students must register with Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and apply to be means-tested for maintenance funding, in order that SASS can send your data to Student Finance England
  • Agree to share consent via your Government Finance Provider with Northumbria University 

Eligible courses

  • All three-year Undergraduate courses. If you choose to undertake a course that includes a placement year, the St. Nicholas Scholarship will not be paid in that year

Important Information

  • Students selected for the St Nicholas will not be eligible for any other Undergraduate scholarship
  • The St Nicholas Scholarship is awarded as cash
  • Payments will be made as 25% of total in November 2022, 25% of total in February 2023 and 50% of total in May 2023
  • Students selected for the St Nicholas Scholarship are required to provide a thank you letter to the St Nicholas Educational Trust and to make themselves available to meet with the trustees in person if requested
  • Funding is provided on an annual basis, based on the successful student progressing to the next year of study
  • Progress updates for the donor will be requested at the end of each academic year.  Subsequent payments will not be made until these updates are received
  • If you do not provide a thank you letter and progress updates to the donor, the scholarship will be withdrawn
  • If you defer your place at Northumbria University before the scholarship has been paid, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn
  • If you decide to leave your course after the scholarship payment has been made, the University will not make efforts to reclaim the amount
  • The University's decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal 

Selection Process

  • Students who are eligible for the St Nicholas Scholarship will be identified by Northumbria University post-enrolment, there is no separate application form
  • The successful St. Nicholas Scholarship students will be chosen from eligible students at random, and will be notified by the end of October 2022
