Bsc Architectural Technology Student Alexnesbitt 255Where are you from?

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

Because of its good reputation and located in such a great city.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I enjoy the outdoors, particularly the Northumberland area. The Quayside is a great area of Newcastle, particularly when the sun is out. The market out in Tynemouth is a nice visit too.  There is a diversity of restaurants and food types, Newcastle has turned me into a food lover.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, the lecturers welcome with open arms and I have met some great people here who I am sure will be friends for life.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Independence and maturity. Coming to University has really helped me mature and become independent; living without your parents is a big change for some people and they find it hard to cope.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Mark Siddall. He runs his own practice, lectures part-time, runs two Passive House courses, hosts CPD events and plays a big role in the sustainable construction community. Time management is key to successfully completing University - it's the story of my life!

What is your favourite place on campus?

To work - I think the HUB and the ZONE are great places to work, plenty of equipment available and windows!  To play - Habita. To eat - Castles cafe, although a bit pricey, this sells great food with a home cooked feel - I do often wander slightly off campus to Zapatista for a cheeky burrito.

What is the best thing about your course?

Collaboration. My course is merged with other course modules, it's great to see how other disciplines work; this is particularly useful in the construction industry.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Don't set too-ambitious targets/goals, you won't meet them and it'll make you stressed. Treat yourself, don't work solidly - take time to socialise, or just sleep! Don't deprive yourself of sleep, you won't function properly.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

My best piece of advice is to do a degree with a placement year; just a degree isn't good enough anymore. Employers want to see a degree and work experience. I took a placement year and I am still working here now, I have travelled the country and attended tons of events (at the company's expense) and met some great people and connections. The whole point of taking a placement is to make connections; connections get you jobs - get a LinkedIn account!

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

University has changed me. I am a more confident, independent, intelligent, honest and reliable person, these are key traits an employer looks for.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Tiring, Stressful and Worth-it!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
