Amsterdam campus opens with ceremonial signing

4th October 2018

Northumbria University’s international partnership with Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) has been formally inaugurated with a ceremonial signing in Amsterdam.

Professor Andrew Wathey CBE, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University, and Dr Geleyn Meijer, Rector and Member of the Executive Board at AUAS signed a document to officially register the partnership and to celebrate the start of the first academic year. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the senior leadership teams from both institutions, and distinguished guests from organisations including the British Council and the British Embassy.

Masters programmes in both Business and Project Management are now being taught in Amsterdam by Northumbria academics working with AUAS colleagues.  Interest has been extremely high for the first year of a new programme launch, with more than 100 applicants and a strong take-up of students wishing to gain a UK-accredited degree while studying in the heart of Amsterdam. The partnership also offers the chance for undergraduates from both institutions to experience overseas study on real business projects, with Northumbria students spending time in Amsterdam and AUAS students studying in Newcastle.

As well as offering high-quality learning, the partnership is also enabling a range of collaborative programmes including research, academic exchange opportunities, and knowledge exchange projects with business partners.

Professor Wathey said: “AUAS is an outstanding university that shares our commitment to quality, academic excellence and providing students with an exceptional learning experience. Today we have cemented our partnership with a ceremonial signing, and welcomed our first cohort of students. We now look forward to deepening our collaboration in teaching, research, exchange programmes and through greater business and cultural engagement – not just in the UK and the Netherlands, but across Europe and internationally.

“Our partnership with AUAS establishes a strong presence for us in mainland Europe and enhances what we can offer both to international and UK students. We look forward to working closely with AUAS over the coming years and building on our early success”
