DECC-MR-SFG20

Digital Engineering for Customised Compliance in Maintenance Regimes - was a collaborative project which developed the industry standard maintenance specification SFG20 service to allow an interface between individual BIMs and SFG20 maintenance tasks.

Digital asset maintenance systems provide a mechanism to schedule regular maintenance regimes on built assets. BIMs are intended to provide detailed information about assets as designed and built. Asset information such as manufacturer details, material, parts and warranty information all assist in the repair, replacement and maintenance of assets. Often gaining access to this information is a slow process that comes with the associated cost of tracking this data and attaching it to asset maintenance registers.

The project used the open source toolkit xBIM (created and developed by members of the BIM Academy) to develop the SFG20 platform to allow interoperability between BIM models and asset maintenance database SFG20.

The outcome of this enables the automatic data transfer between construction and operation and maintenance (O&M) phases. Data transfer from construction to O&M phases permits automatic generation of customised maintenance solutions from BIM models. Conversely, O&M data is used to inform whole-life design decisions, with collaboration between construction and FM teams benefitting stakeholders throughout the building cycle.
