Internship programme enjoys rapid growth

13th October 2015

Newcastle Business School’s Marketing Internship Programme has already forged partnerships with 20 North East SMEs – despite being setup just three years ago.

The programme is a work-based learning scheme offering final year students the opportunity to join some of the region’s most influential SMEs to help improve and cultivate their marketing activity. Acting Director for Business Engagement Dr Matt Sutherland initiated the Marketing Internship Programme, which sees students working 3-4 hours a week on a dedicated marketing project.

Doctor Sutherland said: “Providing students with the opportunity to secure first-hand marketing experience is crucial for their own personal development and allows them to put theory into practice. Many of the SMEs don’t have established marketing departments, so having enthusiastic and creative students working with them can make a real contribution to the business in a short period of time.”

Partnerships include internationally renowned stained glass artist, Maralyn O’Keefe, from ‘The Glass and Art Gallery’ in Consett, which has taken on two students since 2013.

“Working with Newcastle Business School was one of the best decisions we have made for the business”, said Maralyn. “Students Tom and Hailey brought new ideas and expertise to the Gallery and have really developed our online presence. The additional income we have made through our website is purely down to being involved in the Marketing Internship Programme, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.”

Newcastle Business School has a global reputation for delivering some of the best business management education in the UK.
