What will I learn on this module?
This module builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired so far on the course and gives you the opportunity to consolidate your learning and explore the more specific areas of Graphic Design that interest you.
A number of briefs will be offered which accommodate opportunities to take a more specialist approach, or a more generalist approach to the subject area. This will be your first opportunity to tackle a substantial brief of this nature in a chosen area and will result in a significant project for your portfolio at the end of the year.
This project will also help you to reflect upon your progress so far, the aspects of Graphic Design that you have found most rewarding, most challenging and most enjoyable. This process will help you to set your trajectory through 3rd year, giving a focus to your journey through the course.
How will I learn on this module?
This module offers you the opportunity to tackle briefs in a chosen area of Graphic Design and can form a significant part of your portfolio and assist in helping you to find the right placement.
You will learn through a series of blended on-line and studio based critiques. You will be responsible for driving this project forward, alongside tutor-led sessions and this structure will allow you to explore areas of particular interest.
Technical support staff will be available to provide on-going support throughout the Module, as will departmental and faculty technical resources needed for your project outcome.
Outside of the scheduled critique sessions running throughout the module, you have access to the Linked In Learning and Blackboard and can also contact staff personally or by email for additional support if required.

Support and feedback will be provided throughout the module. Support includes; Staff Contact
• Module tutors who provide academic support.
• Module tutors will discuss your project ideas in the initial stages to develop a brief.
• Informal staff-student seminars to inform design project direction.
• Formal group seminars, which enable staff to interact with students and encourage peer learning and support.
• Project requirements are normally introduced via a briefing session, where the module is fully explained and explored by both staff and students.
• The eLearning Portal will be used to communicate all relevant module information and on-line delivery and content.
Studio Contact Time
Delivery is through a blend of on-line and studio based seminars, practical demonstrations, studio and on-line teaching and guided and independent learning.

Peer and Independent Support

What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding
1) Demonstrate your ability to critically analyse, reflect and evaluate your research as evidenced through your development work. 2
Intellectual/Professional Skills & Abilities
2) Show evidence of critical thinking by conceiving, progressing, evaluating and communicating potential creative solutions to Graphic Design outcomes through your development work and final design project. 2.
3) Evidence ability to proficiently use technical and craft skills in the realisation and presentation of Graphic Design solutions to high standards. 3
Personal Value Attributes
4) Demonstrate an ability to evaluate your own progress and exercise an enhanced level of self-criticism whilst showing a professional approach to your studies via your engagement with module staff and peer interactivity. 1, 2.
How will I be assessed?
Students will be assessed against a staff approved brief of their own creation with consideration to the creative processes deployed and the assigned learning outcomes highlighted in the module descriptor.
The assessment and feedback strategy is;
a. Formative Assessment? You will receive verbal formative feedback both individually and in groups throughout the module. This feedback will facilitate development of your two assignments. This feedback will allow you to reflect upon your own work and act upon feedback prior to final submission.
b. Summative assessment
The project brief/s driving the module will identify the assessment criteria and submission requirements (deliverables) appropriate to the topic of the project. This will enable you to demonstrate the process and technical skills developed throughout the module. A single grade will then be aligned to the submission based upon the deliverables.
c. Feedback strategy?Feedback will be delivered verbally at the point of each seminar, where discussion will clarify future direction.
Final project submission will be as part of the end of year degree show and by student presentation, after which staff will assess the submission, and submit your externally moderated grade to the University.
