Chief Financial Officer

Phil MacDonald

Phil MacDonald is Chief Financial Officer (Interim) at Northumbria University.

Phil works closely with the University Executive shaping and delivering the University’s Vision, Strategy and supporting plans. He provides commercial strategic leadership of Financial and Campus Services to ensure the successful delivery of the University Vision and Strategy.

Phil provides strategic leadership and oversight of all financial matters (long term financial strategy for the University, financial control and financial performance, commercial development, procurement and purchasing) to ensure compliance, excellent financial reporting and governance and an appropriate financial control environment

Phil optimises University resources for operations and investment ensuring transparency, consistency, and flexibility and co-leads the University’s annual planning and resourcing process, working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Strategy Officer.

The long-term sustainability of the University’s finances and the development of the estate are key enablers of the University’s 2030 strategic ambitions.

Prior to joining Northumbria on an interim basis, Phil has held senior finance roles in five other UK universities over a 24-year period.

Phil is a qualified Accountant and achieved an MBA at Durham University.
