Dominic Simpson

Academic Biography

Dominic Simpson is the faculty lead for employability, this is a key role within the department management team with a strategic focus on ensuring students develop the right skills for successful graduate careers within healthcare. Dominic is also an Assistant Professor of Nursing Midwifery and Health. Dominic joined the faculty in 2020, prior to joining Northumbria Dominic worked in other higher education roles, he came to the university to further enhance his patient safety and organisational culture research work. Dominic has held a number of clinical nursing roles across the North East of England, his clinical expertise are within emergency medicine, acute care and critical care.  

Dominic Is currently completing his PhD by publication, his research is focused on enhancing patient safety and safe staffing across a range of health care settings.

Dominic holds several positions of responsibility in 2019 he was appointed chair of the Royal College's Northern Research Network a prestigious position that allows him to co-ordinate the networks activities across the region. Dominic is an active member of the British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) he uses his affiliation with the BACCN to provide a national voice to shape the strategy for critical care nursing and to promote safe, quality evidence-based nursing care to the critically ill patient.


In 2019 Dominic was awarded membership of the Health Foundation’s Q network; Q is an initiative connecting people, who have improvement expertise, across the UK

Dominic’s research focus is on patient safety, human factors, simulation-based education and organisational culture.

Learning and Teaching Interests and Activities

in 2021 Dominic was awarded fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Dominic’s learning and teaching interests include: clinical skills, advanced practice skills, simulation, management of the acutely ill adult, human factors and patient safety. Dominic supports the universities delivery of knowledge exchange activity with several regional and national partners.
