In the National Student Survey (2012) 98% of Society Joint Honours students said that staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching and 92% of students said staff are good at explaining things.

The BA Joint Honours programme aims to provide students with a unique opportunity to develop knowledge, insight and understanding of two distinct yet complementary subject areas. This programme facilitates the development of graduate skills, subject expertise and exploration of a range of learning opportunities which will enable students to make an informed choice when determining potential future career pathways.

The part routes of the programme encourage students to acquire knowledge and insight into their chosen subjects, related disciplines, professions, organisations and agencies. Students will develop skills in communication, self-management, reflection, critical analysis, discussion and evaluation and have opportunities to focus on topics which interest them. You will also gain insight into a range of theoretical frameworks that underpin your chosen subject, developing an appreciation and understanding of contemporary ways of working in a range of different contexts.

Childhood Studies

Childhood and youth are hugely significant topics in 21st Century society and Childhood Studies takes views of childhood and youth as a focus of critical enquiry. This route considers a range of perspectives and ideas held by parents, professionals, and young people that impact on children's lives and the cultures in which they live. Childhood Studies encourages you to consider the potential of young people to actively contribute to society.

Why study Childhood Studies?

This part route equips you with the skills and knowledge to analyse and reflect upon the cultural, social and historical contexts within which children and young people grow up.

You will be working with a diverse range of staff who are national and international consultants, researchers and authors in the field. This strong team runs one of the most long-standing routes in Childhood Studies in Britain and is well known for adopting innovative approaches to supporting students as learners. The richness of the teaching team’s research experience is reflected in the curriculum.

Disability Studies

Disability Studies is a multidisciplinary part route, which means you will be examining research and theory from psychology, sociology, history and many other subject areas. For example some of your work will focus on issues around disabled people's physical access to their communities and other work will consider the implications of the latest human rights legislation on disabled people.

Why study Disability Studies?

One in ten people have an impairment of some description, one in four have a disabled family member and disability is almost inevitable as we become older. Several years ago legislation was put in place to protect the rights of women and black and ethnic minorities, more recently as a result of pressure from the Disabled People’s Movement similar legislation was developed for disabled people.

Why study Disability Studies at Northumbria?

This is one of the longest and most respected disability studies courses in the country, being designed and developed in collaboration with the Disabled Peoples’ Movement. This expanding course is taught by well established academics in disability studies. They have a national reputation, publishing widely and conducting research with disabled people, charities, local councils and the NHS. In addition, the core staff have strong links to disabled peoples’ organisations being trustees of local charities run by disabled people. They also edit the international acclaimed Journal Disability and Society.

Entry Requirements 2024/25

Compulsory Requirements

For all courses applicants are usually required to have five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics, or a University recognised equivalent.

Plus one of the following:

GCE and VCE Advanced Level:
A minimum of 300 UCAS Tariff points including 200 UCAS Tariff points from two GCE or VCE A levels. Remaining points must be achieved from no more than two further GCE or VCE A or AS levels. The Extended Project Qualification will be accepted in lieu of one AS level.
Edexcel/BTEC National:
Distinction, Distinction, Merit
Scottish Highers:
BBBBC at Highers level, BBC at Advanced Higher.
Irish Highers:
BBBBB.
International Baccalaureate:
26 points
Other QAA-recognised access programme:
Full Access Award. Units to be achieved at Distinction and Merit grades.

Access course students without GCSEs are not required to take these qualifications in addition to their Access Award, but must ensure that any required subjects are fully met within their Access course.</p</p</p</p</p
International/English Language Requirements:
International applicants are required to have one of the following English language qualifications with grades as shown below.
- A British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 5.5
- Pearson Academic score of 62 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 51

Don't meet the academic or English language entry requirements for this course?
You can still study with us as you may be eligible for our International Foundation Programme. Successful completion of our International Foundation Programme (with a minimum 50% pass mark and English grades BBBB) will guarantee you entry on to this degree.&am

Entry with advanced standing
Applicants with HND, Foundation Degree or equivalent qualifications may be considered for entry directly into Year 2.
Selection:
All applicants to this course are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to supply a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced certificate. The University will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place on the course.
